When it comes to local search engine optimization, things can get confusing. You think you´ve done a great job and your business website is moving up and up in the Google ranks . . . when suddenly, your website is gone. Not only wiped off the first page, but pretty much impossible to find! This is a fairly common scenario, but it still worries many beginners in local search engine optimization. There are a few reasons why Google might sink your site.

Identical anchor text.
If you are trying to rank for “local SEO” and you insist that everyone link to you using those two words, Google gets suspicious and may penalize you for gaming the system. Instead, try to use similar phrases. For example, “Local search engine optimization” “SEO” “Local SEO” “Local SEO techniques”, etc.

Poor reciprocal links. When you exchange links with other websites, make sure they are related to your content. Google looks unfavorably on those who link to a chocolate basket site from an automotive repair blog.

Sandbox. Google has a notorious sandbox where they put websites that are fairly new, especially if they rose through the ranks quickly. There are other reasons to end up in the sandbox, but chances are you will be out at some point in the near future. Just remember that this is fairly normal, just about everyone goes through it.

It´s completely normal to see your site moving up and and down in the ranks of Google, this doesn´t necessarily have much to do with your local search engine optimization. Rest assured that it happens to the best of sites and just keep plugging away. Eventually, you will find yourself where you want to be, if your techniques are clean and good.

Well, it´s getting more important, so if you haven´t focused on local search engine optimization yet, then you definitely need to start working on it now. Even pages that are semi-optimized can be updated and made more search engine friendly. It´s worth doing this now, because with the amazing growth we´ve been seeing in the local advertising search results, you could be missing out on a lot of valuable traffic.

Press releases are generally thought of as something that is sent out to newspapers and radio stations, but these days you should be expanding your thinking and aiming for a bigger audience. Online news sites are often on the lookout for content and may even be willing to put up more content than a print medium.

If you want instant results, you need something that costs a lot more, like pay per click advertising. However, nothing beats free, organic local search engine optimization for low cost marketing.

While you do need to be patient, there´s no reason not to continue tweaking and improving your local search engine optimization. Add more content to your website. If you have a blog, be sure to post to it on a regular basis. Work hard to get backlinks while you´re waiting for all your work to pay off. Once you get picked up by the search engines, you will move up through the ranks faster because you´ve already done so much to help your blog grow.

Waiting for your website to move up in the ranks, waiting for Page Rank or for your website to get noticed . . . but you should never sit still. If you have a blog that you use to promote your website, here are a few local search engine optimization techniques that will help it move up in the search engine ranks.

  • Use local search engine optimized titles. Using your keyword phrase at the beginning of your blog post titles will help the blog and the individual posts rank well for your keywords.
  • Use tags. Using your keywords in the title isn´t the only way to make your blog posts stand out to seach engines, you can also add tags. If you use Wordpress, this is now automatically added at the bottom, just type in your keywords or tags.

Or at least it could, if people stopped receiving paper directories that they never use. A recent report by welovelocal.com, a British local advertising company, indicates that 17,500,000 printed business directories are delivered each year to people who don´t want them! That´s a lot of trees and if you´re into the environment, you can do a lot of good by focusing on local search engine optimization.

According to the same report, 51% of people prefer to use the internet to look for local businesses, as opposed to just 24% who used print directories for reference. While printed business directories are still very useful (we certainly can´t discount that 24%!), the internet is obviously becoming a favorite medium for doing searches, making it that much more important to do local search engine optimization on your website.

While saving trees may be secondary to your desire to earn money, local search engine optimization can do both at the same time. All that is left to do is convince those who produce the business directories not to send them to those who have no need for them. The internet is faster and more efficient than a paper book and for this reason, more people are interested in using it as a resource.

For example, if you have a pizza place in Vancouver, you might try for the keyword phrase “Vancouver Pizza”, by repeating it various times on your webpages. However, this isn´t the only search phrase that could relate to your business. Local search engine optimization will be far more effective if you take into consideration other options.

In this case, people might be doing a little more detailed searching. They don´t want Vancouver pizza that is on the other side of the city, so they look for “Pizza, Burnaby, Vancouver” If your website neglects to mention that you are located in Burnaby, you could end up ranking fairly low for this search. And even lower if they just look for “Burnaby pizza”.

Taking other search phrases into account could really help your business. Local search engine optimization can be a very useful way to bring extra traffic to your website and gain attention for your local business, but only if you do it correctly. Let´s take a look at some of the most common errors made by those getting started in local search engine optimization.

Don´t spam. No doubt you´ve seen those emails offering services to submit your business site to 500 website directories or offers to get your ad in 20,000 inboxes. These don´t help you at all, and you´ll be out $25-50 that was badly spent. Local search engine optimization should be about building natural links, not spammy ones.

Avoid general keywords. While it would be great to rank #1 for “crafts” or “internet marketing”, these keywords are so competitive that you have no chance of getting that top place. However, being more specific gives you a far better opportunity, so instead of “crafts” you might go for “Topeka yarn crafts”. True local search engine optimization will utilize a locale as a keyword.

Watch the keyword stuffing. Keywords are good, so more must be better, right? Wrong. If every other word in your articles is a keyword, the search engines will pick up on that. Using over 5% keyword density is just asking for trouble.

Just because you have done well with one keyword phrase doesn´t mean you should sit back and congratulate yourself . . . there is a lot more work to do.

Once you have ranked for that first keyword or phrase, it´s time to get creative with your local search engine optimization and start aiming for more specialized searches and get that super targeted traffic that is almost guaranteed to net you a sale. And it really doesn´t have to be that difficult.
