Covid-19 impacted almost every industry across the world, and a 2023 study shows that in the UK, the impact it had on the perception of the manufacturing sector was hugely positive.
The study found that 93% of respondents viewed manufacturing as vital to the UK’s economic future. This was a whopping 70% increase from five years prior.

During the pandemic, manufacturers pivoted to produce essential items such as ventilators, medical gowns, and hand sanitisers. This highlighted their adaptability and resilience, as well as the important role they play in equipping the country with what it needs, no matter what.
A Spotlight on Careers
The survey also indicates a positive transformation in how the public perceives careers in manufacturing.
Over half of the respondents now consider manufacturing a good career choice, recognising it as a high-skilled, technical, and wage-positive sector.
This shift is also supported by increased encouragement from parents for their children, including their daughters, to pursue careers in manufacturing.
36% of parents are now open to this career path, whereas only 14% felt this way five years ago.
Increased Availability of Equipment
The UK has made notable strides in global manufacturing rankings, by moving from 43rd to 8th place. This reflects the sector’s global competitiveness and innovation.
